The Downfall of Pesticides for Lice Removal
Traditionally there have been three ways of treating head lice: over the counter Do-It-Yourself (DIY) treatments, nit-picking, and home remedies. All can have their down falls, but recently the least effective have been DIY treatments featuring pyrethroids.
Pyrethrins used to treat head lice are naturally occurring pyrethroid extracts derived from the chrysanthemum flower. When used as directed they are safe for lice removal in children over 2 years of age. They can be used to kill any living lice but do not kill nits, or lice eggs. A second treatment should be done 9-10 days after the first to kill any newly hatched lice before they can lay new eggs. Traditionally these treatments have been some of the most effective lice treatments, but the spread of ‘super lice’ has made them less effective.
Why Are Pyrethroids Becoming Less Effective?
Well pyrethroids can still be effective on some lice, the lice community has seen a huge flux in ‘super lice’ over the past few years. Super lice are lice that have developed a resistance to pyrethroids and chemical treatments. These super lice have been found in 48 states and several countries across the world.
It has also been found that there is a link between pyrethroids and child behavior problems. Research concluded that pyrethroids might alter neurochemical signaling in the brain. Pyrethroids should not be used by anyone allergic to the chrysanthemum flower or ragweed as it may cause an allergic reaction.
